Let's Cut to the Chase
On Mondays, I normally pick up my niece and nephew from school along with my girls. I was slightly late today so they all went to Extend Ed for about 10 minutes. When I went inside to let them know I was here, I noticed Kaitlin and my niece jump into action picking their stuff up and saw Kaitlin mouthing something to her.
I did not think anything of it, but noticed they all were acting more cheerful than normal. As I checked to make sure my nephew had his seat belt on, I asked him how his day was, and he kept just staring at me and answering in one syllables. Again, something seemed a little odd, but I could not put my finger on it.
As soon as I got back in the car, Kaitlin and my niece looked at each other with a knowing look and my niece starts saying
J: Tia Ileana, we were talking inside about something, but you don’t have to say yes if you don't want to.
Kaitlin: Yes, we said that we would ask you, but that if you said no it was fine.
As a side note, for a while, every time I would pick the kids up from school they would start begging me to get them something, an ice cream, a juice, fast food. One day I got tired of it and told them that as a general rule, when I picked them up we were going straight home, and they could eat once we got there, and to please stop begging for stuff.
Today I could see they were trying to come up with the best possible words to avoid upsetting me.
All of the sudden Natalie pipes in from the back:
"I'll just tell you clearly! Kaitlin and Jacqui wanted to know if you would take us to Taco Bell, but we promised that if you said no we were going to be OK with it."
It was so spontaneous and sounded so grown up we all just looked at each other and burst out laughing. And yes, I caved in and took them to Taco Bell.
Natalie better be careful or people are going to start accusing her of having "no filter" like her mother.
